Four Nearly Identical Battery Part Numbers: Which One Your Camera Takes
Canon's LP-E6 family and Nikon's EN-EL15 family each come in four versions that share a slot. This page shows which suffix each maker lists for your body, and what an older pack switches off or slows down.
The short answer
Order a suffix the camera maker lists for your body. Where the camera's manual names one, order that one. A store listing only tells you the pack fits the slot.
- Canon EOS R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III or R6 V: order the LP-E6P. Each camera's guide marks the LP-E6NH and LP-E6N as partially functional and the original LP-E6 as not compatible, and names the LP-E6P for optimal performance.
- Canon EOS R5, R6, R7 or R6 Mark II: Canon's chart marks the LP-E6P, LP-E6NH and LP-E6N compatible. Canon rates the LP-E6P and LP-E6NH at 2,130 mAh and the LP-E6N at 1,865 mAh. Before relying on an LP-E6P, update the camera to firmware 2.1.0 or later (R5), 1.9.0 or later (R6), 1.6.0 or later (R7) or 1.5.0 or later (R6 Mark II). The original LP-E6 is also marked compatible, but it can't be charged in the camera and it limits the maximum continuous shooting speed.
- Nikon Z8, Z7II, Z6III, Z6II, Z5II, Z5, Zf or ZR: order the EN-EL15c. Each of these manuals names it and says an EN-EL15b or EN-EL15a also works but takes fewer pictures per charge. Of those older packs, only the EN-EL15b charges inside the camera.
- Original Nikon Z6 or Z7: the manual names the EN-EL15b, which came with the camera, and says an EN-EL15c also works, while an EN-EL15a or EN-EL15 takes fewer pictures per charge. The EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c both charge inside the camera. Of the two, the EN-EL15c carries the higher rated capacity, 2,280 mAh against 1,900 mAh.
- Nikon DSLRs: Nikon's chart lists the EN-EL15c for the D850, D810/D810A, D780, D750, D610, D500, D7500 and D7200, but stops at the EN-EL15b for the D800/D800E, D7100, D7000 and D600. Nikon says to use the battery your camera's manual specifies. Among these DSLRs, Nikon lists in-camera charging only for the D780.
- Sony α7 III, α7 IV or α6700: Sony's help guides name the NP-FZ100, with no suffix to choose between. The α7 IV guide says to use only genuine Sony battery packs.
Canon: LP-E6, LP-E6N, LP-E6NH and LP-E6P
Canon rates the LP-E6NH at 2,130 mAh and the LP-E6N at 1,865 mAh, in the same size. The LP-E6P keeps the 2,130 mAh rating. Canon gives its maximum continuous discharge current as 6 A and says only that this is higher than the LP-E6NH's. Canon ties the higher current to higher performance in newer bodies, starting with the EOS R5 Mark II.

The chart names seven bodies that take this family: the EOS R5, R6, R7 and R6 Mark II, and the newer R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III and R6 V. If your camera isn't on it, as with Canon's EOS DSLRs, go by the battery section of that camera's manual. If the manual doesn't mention the pack you're considering, it doesn't settle the question, so ask Canon before you order.
Older packs in the EOS R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III and R6 V
In the EOS R5 Mark II, the manual says an LP-E6NH or LP-E6N costs you:
- Wi-Fi and wired LAN.
- Full continuous shooting speed.
- The 8K DCI, 8K UHD, RAW and SRAW movie recording sizes, Fine image quality, and the 239.76, 200.00, 119.88, 100.00, 59.94 and 50.00 fps frame rates.
- HDMI RAW output, still photos during movie recording, High Frame Rate movies and pre-continuous shooting.
- Use of the CF-R20EP cooling fan, if you attach one.
- Part of the pack's capacity, which the camera cannot use up.
The camera shows a restricted-operation message at startup with one of these packs loaded. If those video modes are why you chose the body, check the card side too: what a card's speed marks guarantee.
In the EOS R6 Mark III the list is shorter. With an LP-E6NH or LP-E6N, Wi-Fi is unavailable, continuous shooting is slower, and the camera cannot use the pack's full capacity. The battery information screen also drops its 1% readout, and the pack cannot be registered.
The EOS R6 V guide lists a different set. With an LP-E6NH or LP-E6N, the cooling fan settings and Wi-Fi are unavailable, some accessories can't be used, and the camera can't use the pack's full capacity. The R6 V also shows a restricted-operation message at startup.
Two traps apply to the R5 Mark II and R6 Mark III. The BG-R10 grip brings the same limits back even with LP-E6P packs in it. And both manuals warn that pairing an LP-E6P with an LP-E6NH or LP-E6N in a grip can mean fewer shots and less operating time than one LP-E6P alone.
An LP-E6P in an earlier body
Canon's chart says the firmware update that adds LP-E6P support is what lets an LP-E6P match LP-E6NH continuous shooting speed in the EOS R5, R6, R7 and R6 Mark II. Canon's update notes name the version that added it: 2.1.0 for the R5, 1.9.0 for the R6, 1.6.0 for the R7 and 1.5.0 for the R6 Mark II. Each note says the update lets the camera use the LP-E6P without limitation and charge it in the camera. Update to that version or a later one.
The chart marks the LP-E6NH compatible in these four bodies with no firmware note. If you may move to an R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III or R6 V later, their guides mark the LP-E6P fully functional in the camera body and the LP-E6NH only partially functional.
Nikon: EN-EL15, EN-EL15a, EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c
Nikon calls the series mainly cross-compatible, with a caveat: an earlier battery in a camera designed for a later one takes fewer pictures per charge. Nikon's advice is to use the battery your camera's manual specifies. The sharper split is charging.

The EN-EL15a and EN-EL15b share a 1,900 mAh rating and both fit, but only the EN-EL15b charges inside the camera. Only the EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c charge in Nikon's MH-34 charger. The Z6III manual says an attempt to charge an EN-EL15a in the camera ends with the charge lamp flashing rapidly for about 30 seconds, then going off. That pack charges in an MH-25a instead.
In-camera charging also depends on the body. Nikon lists it for every Z body that takes the EN-EL15 series, but among its DSLRs only for the D780. Nikon USA's EN-EL15c page puts it the same way: the pack charges in the camera only on bodies that can charge batteries in-camera.
The newest version is not universal either. Nikon's chart stops at the EN-EL15b for the D800/D800E, D7100, D7000 and D600. And the plain EN-EL15 is missing from the lists for the Z8, Z6III, Z5II, Zf and ZR.
Check your charger before you order an EN-EL15c. Nikon lists the MH-25a and MH-34 for it. The original MH-25 is on Nikon's list for the other three versions, but not for the EN-EL15c.
USB power delivery is separate from charging. In the Z6III manual it means running the camera from a USB-C source while the camera is on. Charging happens while the camera is off or its standby timer is off, and only an EN-EL15c or EN-EL15b charges. Power is supplied only with a battery inserted. With the MB-N11 grip on the Z7II or Z6II, Nikon says its EH-7P adapter can power the camera with any of the four versions inserted, but charges only the EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c.
Which Z bodies also charge from a computer or a power bank is a point where Nikon's own documents disagree, so confirm it for your body before you count on it.
The EN-EL15c's 2,280 mAh rating works out to 20 percent more than the 1,900 mAh of the other three.
Offered a used original EN-EL15? Look at the 9th character of the lot number on its name plate. Nikon's recall notice says a pack with E or F there needs to be replaced, citing reports of recalled packs overheating, and asks owners to contact Nikon Customer Support.
Sony: one part number

Sony's help guides for these three bodies name the same pack, with no suffix to decode. In each guide the battery has its own entry near the end of the Specifications page. The α7 IV guide says to use only genuine Sony battery packs.
Genuine packs and look-alikes
Canon and Nikon both describe counterfeits that copy their branding. Canon says counterfeit packs fraudulently display its logo, and Nikon's examples include a fake EN-EL15b with the product name printed on its front. A matching part number doesn't prove a pack is genuine.
- Canon: Canon U.S.A. points buyers to Canon's online store and its authorized dealers. It says genuine Canon lithium-ion packs are sold with a hologram label on the package, and that it also places an additional hologram on some batteries, the LP-E6NH among them as of May 2021. Both holograms change as you tilt them. Canon's safety notice adds that counterfeits have been reported as frequently sold on internet auction sites.
- Canon in the camera: the EOS R6 can show a battery communication error that asks whether the battery displays the Canon logo. Canon's remedies are to use a genuine Canon pack, remove and reinsert the battery, and clean dirty contacts with a soft cloth.
- Nikon, buying: Nikon's European support site says packs sold by Nikon authorized dealers or the Nikon Store are guaranteed genuine. Nikon USA says products imported and sold by anyone other than Nikon Inc. USA are gray market and may include counterfeit or third-party accessories, and it publishes a list of its authorized dealers.
- Nikon, checking: Nikon has confirmed counterfeits of all four EN-EL15 versions. On a pack with a security hologram, look for the word Nikon printed repeatedly in bands, four small cuts in the hologram, and text that changes color as you tilt the pack. Nikon's European site also offers to check a pack from photos of all six sides.
- Nikon in the camera: the Z6III refuses a battery that cannot provide data to the camera. Nikon's listed fixes range from charging a battery whose level is extremely low to replacing third-party batteries with genuine Nikon ones.
What to check before you order
- Read the part number on the pack you have now. Nikon points to the name-plate on the back of the battery and to Setup menu > Battery Info.
- Find your body on the maker's list: Canon's battery chart (or, for a body it doesn't name, the camera's manual), Nikon's battery and charger chart, or the Specifications page of your Sony help guide.
- Order a suffix the maker lists for your body, and prefer the one the camera's manual names. A listing that pairs an LP-E6NH with an R5 Mark II, or an EN-EL15a with a Z6III, only tells you the pack fits.
- Adding an LP-E6P to an R5, R6, R7 or R6 Mark II? Update the firmware first, to the version listed above or a later one.
- Ordering an EN-EL15c to charge outside the camera? Nikon lists the MH-25a and MH-34 for it.
- Want the maker's assurance that a pack is genuine? Canon and Nikon both point to their own stores and authorized dealers.

What this page does not tell you
- For Canon, the page covers only the seven EOS R bodies on Canon's battery chart. For any other Canon body, including EOS DSLRs, go by the battery section of the camera's manual and ask Canon before you order an LP-E6P or LP-E6NH.
- The battery limits for the EOS R6 Mark III and R6 V come from their current web manuals. Canon posted firmware 1.1.0 notices for both bodies in July 2026, so check whether a later firmware changes those limits.
- The page gives no capacity figure for the original LP-E6. Check Canon's specifications for it.
- Nikon's own documents give different lists of Z bodies that charge from a computer or power bank, and Nikon doesn't say whether USB power delivery through the camera's own port works with an EN-EL15a or EN-EL15. Check your camera's manual or ask Nikon.
- For Nikon DSLRs, the page gives Nikon's chart but doesn't name the battery each DSLR's manual specifies. Nikon says to use that battery, so check your manual.
- The page has no Sony steps for spotting a counterfeit NP-FZ100. Sony's α7 IV guide says to use only genuine Sony battery packs.

- The EOS R6 troubleshooting guide lists the message asking whether the battery displays the Canon logo, with three remedies: use only a genuine Canon LP-E6P/LP-E6NH/LP-E6N/LP-E6, remove and install the battery again, and clean dirty contacts with a soft cloth.
- Canon U.S.A. says counterfeit accessories fraudulently display the Canon logo and other trademarks, have been reported as frequently sold on Internet auction sites, and that genuine Canon lithium-ion battery packs are sold with a distinctive hologram label on the package.
- Canon U.S.A. tells buyers to purchase directly from the Canon Online Store or its Authorized Dealers, to look for the Canon hologram on the package, says it also places an additional hologram on some batteries including the LP-E6NH (as of May 2021), and says both holograms change when tilted.

- Nikon says the EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b can be charged inside the Z8, Z7II, Z7, Z6III, Z6II, Z6, Z5II, Z5, Zf and ZR using the EH-7P/EH-8P and UC-E25.
- Nikon says to identify an EN-EL15 battery from the name-plate on its back and from Setup menu > Battery Info.
- Nikon's series article says the EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b can be charged inside the Z7II, Z6III, Z6II and Z5 when connected to a computer or an Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD 45W power bank with the UC-E25 cable.
- Of the four EN-EL15 versions, the EN-EL15c has the highest rated capacity, 2,280 mAh against 1,900 mAh for the others.
- 2,280 mAh is 20 percent more than 1,900 mAh.
- Nikon's chart lists a USB charging AC adapter for every EN-EL15 Z body (Z8, Z7II, Z7, Z6III, Z6II, Z6, Z5II, Z5, Zf, ZR), with footnote 2: in-camera USB battery charging is only possible with the EN-EL15b and EN-EL15c.
- Among Nikon's DSLRs, the chart lists a charging AC adapter (EH-7P/EH-8P) only for the D780; the professional DSLR table marks it 'x' for the D850, D810/D810A, D800/D800E, D750 and D500, and the consumer DSLR table lists none for the D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D610 or D600.
- Nikon's chart says only the EN-EL15b/EN-EL15c can be charged with the MH-34, and the MH-34 cannot charge the EN-EL15 or EN-EL15a.
- Nikon's chart lists the EN-EL15c for the D850, D810/D810A, D780, D750, D610, D500, D7500 and D7200.
- Nikon's chart lists EN-EL15/a/b, without the EN-EL15c, for the D800/D800E, D7100, D7000 and D600.
- Nikon's chart lists EN-EL15a/b/c, without the plain EN-EL15, for the Z8, Z6III, Z5II, Zf and ZR.
- Every EN-EL15-family body in Nikon's chart lists the EN-EL15a and EN-EL15b.
- Nikon's chart says replacement batteries, chargers and AC adapters can be purchased through a local Nikon authorized dealer or the Nikon Store.

- With the MB-N11 on the Z 7II/Z 6II, the EH-7P supplies power to the camera when EN-EL15c, EN-EL15b, EN-EL15a or EN-EL15 batteries are inserted, and charges only EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b batteries.
- The Z 5 manual names the EN-EL15c and says the EN-EL15b, EN-EL15a and EN-EL15 can also be used but give fewer pictures per charge.

- The Z6III manual says only the EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b charge in the camera, the EN-EL15a charges in an MH-25a, and an attempt to charge an EN-EL15a makes the charge lamp flash rapidly for about 30 seconds before turning off.
- The Z6III manual defines USB power delivery as the camera drawing power from connected devices while on, supplies power only with a battery inserted, and says EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b batteries charge when the camera is off or its standby timer is off.

- Nikon USA says products imported and sold by anyone other than Nikon Inc. USA are gray market, that they may include counterfeit or third-party accessories, that a counterfeit battery or charger can malfunction and damage equipment, and links its list of authorized imaging dealers.
